Coral reefs support an estimated 25% of all marine species despite covering less than 0.1% of the ocean floor โ a concentration of biodiversity that has earned them the title "rainforests of the sea." A substantial portion of this diversity consists of fish: over 4,000 species of fish are associated with coral reef habitats, displaying a range of colour, form, behaviour, and ecological strategy unmatched anywhere else in the ocean. Understanding how so many species coexist in such a constrained habitat โ without driving each other to extinction through competition โ is one of reef ecology's most productive research questions.

The extraordinary coloration of reef fish serves multiple distinct functions. In some species, bright colors signal toxicity or unpalatability to predators โ the striking black and white banding of lionfish warns that its venomous spines are real. In others, color provides camouflage against the equally colourful reef background. Many species use colour for species recognition โ identifying conspecifics for reproduction or territorial interactions in the visually complex reef environment. Cleaner fish โ wrasses that remove parasites from other fish โ advertise their services with distinctive colour patterns that signal their role and protect them from being eaten by the predatory fish they clean.
Many reef fish species have evolved the ability to change sex โ a strategy called sequential hermaphroditism. Clownfish, famously, are protandrous hermaphrodites: all clownfish are born male, and when the dominant female in a group dies, the dominant male changes sex to replace her. Wrasses and parrotfish are protogynous โ individuals begin life as females and may change to male later if they grow large enough to compete for reproductive dominance. These strategies allow fish to maximise their reproductive success across their lifespan โ small individuals are better off as females, producing eggs; large individuals as males, controlling territories and fertilising eggs from multiple females.
