The world's coastlines are among its most threatened environments. Sea level rise — projected to increase by between 0.3 and 1.0 metres by 2100 under current emissions trajectories — will inundate low-lying coastal habitats, accelerate erosion, and increase the frequency and severity of coastal flooding. Development pressure converts coastal habitats to ports, resorts, aquaculture ponds, and urban infrastructure at rates that have already eliminated more than half of the world's mangrove forests and seagrass meadows. And marine pollution — nutrients, plastics, and chemicals — degrades water quality in coastal ecosystems already stressed by warming and acidification.

One of the most powerful insights in coastal management over the past two decades has been the recognition that intact coastal ecosystems provide storm protection, erosion control, and flood buffering services that are often more cost-effective than engineered alternatives. Coral reefs dissipate up to 97% of incoming wave energy before it reaches the shore — a service estimated to be worth over $1 trillion annually in avoided coastal damages and flood protection globally. Mangrove forests reduce wave height by 50-70% within 100 metres of the forest edge. Salt marshes and seagrass meadows stabilise sediments and reduce erosion rates dramatically compared to unvegetated coasts.
Mangrove forests — the salt-tolerant trees and shrubs that fringe tropical and subtropical coastlines — have been reduced to approximately 50% of their historical extent through conversion to shrimp aquaculture ponds, urban development, and logging. Their restoration has become one of the most active areas of coastal conservation globally. Successful mangrove restoration requires careful attention to hydrology — restoring blocked tidal channels, matching species to appropriate salinity and inundation regimes, and protecting restored areas from grazing by livestock. Where these conditions are met, mangroves can recolonise degraded sites rapidly, providing storm protection and carbon storage within a decade.
